DASEIN

ABOUT

Dasein is a postmodern, meta-narrative avant-garde feature film. It tells the story of a young painter Aniket Chatterjee, who commits suicide by taking sleeping pills. When he slowly approaches towards death, standing at the boundary of life and death, what comes to his mind, what he realises, this film is all about that. It is a voyage from one’s consciousness to sub consciousness and at times the boundary becomes blurring.

The film deals with issues such as person hood, mortality and the paradox of living in relationship with other humans while being ultimately alone with one self. The story revels that morality does not inherently exist, and that any established moral values are abstractly contrived. It explores the roots of eternal human desire and despair. The crisis of existence and human values in today’s material world has been portrayed in the film.

Finally it is all about one’s search for his inner self, the absolute truth and his salvation.

SYNOPSIS

Dasein is an experimental, meta-modern, Avant-garde, narrative feature film. In an examination of the meaning of life, Dasein is the story of Aniket, (Sumanta Mukherjee) an artist growing up in India.

As a young boy Aniket discovers his mother has hung herself. Being his only companion and role model, his dependence on her and the comfort she provided is essentially stripped away. Growing up virtually as an orphan since his father is always away on business, he develops his own system of values and perceptions at an early age.

As a young adult his father remarries a much younger woman (Anu Chatterjee) which only adds to his artistic angst as his resolve is challenged by the lonely Anu. The outcome is not pleasant as it threatens his spiritual commitment to Hrittika, (Manisha Chakravorty) his current girlfriend from college.

Another harsh emotional blow comes when Hrittika, the love of his life, the woman who promised to never leave him – leaves him.

The final coup de grace comes when a fellow art student and friend Ipshita, (Ipshita Samanta) steals his concept and takes First Place in a very prestigious art competition.

This is the last straw for Aniket and in his desperate attempt to claim any victory at all over his own existence; he commits suicide with an overdose of sleeping pills. Only when he feels closer to death is he able to take control of his destiny and win his emancipation from an otherwise dystopian life of false pretence, misguided desires and emotional pain.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

Dasein is a Meta-modern, experimental, polyphonic film. In this film we have tried to tell a very common story in an unconventional way. The basic concept of the film is to discover the essence of each being. The film explores protagonist’s character through desire, obsession, contradiction, ambivalence & conflict. Being a Postmodern film, Dasein is sceptical about religious institutions and it rejects all social norms. Its cross storytelling, non linear narrative structure, and different perspective story telling style represent it as a counter cinema.

In this film we have tried to implement a completely new narrative model (3 Dimensional Narrative). Several types of plots have been used to construct this Narrative model. We can explain it like this geometrical way.

A straight line has been passed through the centre of four concentric circles. For example, say the protagonist, Aniket is at the centre of the plot. Four characters (parameters: His mother, Step mother, Girl friend and his competitor Ipshita ) and their individual stories rotate in four different circular paths. A separate linear plot (Aniket with the guys) has also passed through the centre of the circles.

In this film, time has been portrayed as an imaginary exponential parameter. It moves in different dimensions randomly like an imaginary exponential equation (Based on Eulers formula).

This narrative structure can be considered as a derivative form of Fractured Tandem (Portmanteau). Hybridization of different genres, art forms and cultures has been done in Dasein. Here we have tried to blend Fiction’with the style of Documentary and Old Indian Palagans (Operas). So acting styles of different art forms could be observed in this film. Time and perspective play an important role in our experimentation as mentioned before. Time moves forward as well as backward direction randomly. For example, in a surreal scene, we have shown Reverse evolution (Unar Tan Syndrome) of human at the reversal movement of time (Based on the Big Bang Theory).

Sometimes it could be observed that two different time lines co exist simultaneously in a single scene. The same character of different time lines interacts with each others at a point of time. Bookend flashback & Flash forward (Prolepsis) are also used in storytelling to articulate the context properly. Finally the movie is, to experience rather to merely watch as Dasein refers to experiencing ones own existence.
